Senior Commercial Manager - Bristol/Birmingham,  UK Rail 

Role

We are looking to bolster our commercial team within our UK Rail business unit with the appointment of a Senior Commercial Manager. The Senior Commercial Lead will take full commercial responsibility and ownership of two portfolio's of work, working closely with the commercial managers to ensure a successful project is delivered, while maintaining relationships and maximising commercial returns and managing risk. The ideal candidate will have either a small works or FM background (not necessarily a rail background)

Key Responsibilties 

Clients
  • Liaise with the customer, their representatives and other 3rd parties on commercial issues.
  • Initiates valuable business relationships and works to ensure they are developed effectively.
  • Professionally network beyond Sisk, drawing on these contacts to support business objectives.
  • Proposes actions in response to changes in client and stakeholder needs and expectations. 
Work Winning
  • Identify unacceptable terms and conditions and negotiate contracts with clients and employers (including CRC).
  • Identify unacceptable wording in bonds, warranties, and other guarantees.
  • Identify contractual & commercial work winning strategies including analysis of risk and opportunity.
  • Take an active role in setting tender direction, and alignment of win themes during PQQ and tender phase
Project Delivery
  • Cost and value management, ensuring appropriate systems and procedures are in place.
  • Responsible for the quality of financial reporting for projects and portfolios that make up the BU.
  • Enhance change management systems and processes for project & portfolio including recording change and allocating responsibilities.
  • Identify and evaluate recovery options for any non-client change (including recovery from 3rd parties. 
  • Supervises the preparation of Cost Plans for complex projects, using a range of cost planning techniques and software, manages the compilation of data to permit various analyses.
  • Interrogate and manages project cost report raw data and provide analysis that can inform key decisions 
  • Prepares long term cash forecasts for complex projects, monitors results, and   interprets reasons for deviations. Uses established techniques to minimise outflow of cash and maximise inflow. 
  • Devises innovative systems to control and monitor direct works and financial performance.
Monthly Reporting
  • Manage and enhance complex Project Cost Reporting systems, with capacity to interrogate data and trends 
  • Conducts CVR Reporting sessions across Core Rail business each month, interrogates positions and makes necessary interventions to mitigate risk and maximise opportunity (independently leveraging assistance from others were necessary) with RD support.
  • Compiles Core Rail BU pack (offline) for Rail accounts review meeting each month:
    • Core Rail Overview
    • WIP update for Rail position
    • Core Rail Resilience update
    • Identified Red / Green Flag schemes with detailed understanding of issue and mitigation.
  • Available to step in and support RCD in Group Accounts review meetings where necessary.
  • Provide feedback on reporting systems to respond to the demands of the business unit.
  • Complete BI360 / Solver upload for BU following CVR reviews each month
Risk
  • Risk and opportunity management for project. Management (with operations team) of known and newly identified risks and opportunities for best project return and identification and implementation of mitigation.
  • Manage commercial team to ensure delivery of key responsibilities and develop their knowledge.
  • Reports risks associated with liability and draft step-down clauses into Sub-Contract/Consultancy Agreements.
Upskilling / Development
  • Ensure a Team development plan is live and offering value to all members of the team.
  • Provide support and training for site staff on commercial items.
  • Trains and shares knowledge at every opportunity and mentors as part of Excellerate Programme.
  • Has detailed knowledge and experience of the project cost management system and can provide detailed guidance to others.
  • Proactively ensures own and colleagues’ objectives/activities are aligned to Sisk and BU plans.
  • Develop clear Succession plan and strategy for Core Rail business with RD engagement and buy-in.
People
  • Live the Sisk Values of Care, Integrity and Excellence and ensure that these values are embedded into all activities.
  • Lead the commercial people needs of the business unit including recruitment and attrition.
  • Provide strategic business support to the RD, SLT and the Rail Board.
  • Lead the integration of people into the business (from external or internal appointments).
  • Act as a Sisk Ambassador across appropriate external events.
  • Line Manager experience is desirable, you would be looking after a team of circa 25.
